Beaches are the main attraction of Royan. The city has five main ones arranged in a crescent around the bay – unique geography on the Atlantic coast.
Royan Conche Beach is the great central beach – 2 km of golden sand, lively, supervised, with direct views of the waterfront and rebuilt Royan seafront. It’s the beating heart of Royan beach life in July-August. Pontaillac Beach, to the north, is the most elegant: its casino and Belle Époque villas give it exquisite old-fashioned charm. Foncillon Beach, between the two, is the most family-friendly – shallow water, fine sand, ideal for children.
Claire’s tip: Conche beach is the most lively at Royan but also the most crowded in August. Prefer Foncillon for young children – the shoreface depression (shoreface) is less pronounced there and currents are calmer. Pontaillac is perfect for a quiet morning.
Royan Notre-Dame Church – Our Lady – is a world architectural symbol. Built between 1954 and 1958 by Guillaume Gillet and André Morisseau, this church in prestressed concrete is one of the most extraordinary monuments of 20th century architecture in France. Its ribbed vaults, stained glass windows by Henri Martin-Granel and futuristic silhouette evoke more a reinvented Gothic cathedral than a post-war construction. An absolute must of Royan culture.
Royan’s central market is one of the most beautiful and lively covered markets in the South-West Atlantic. Its reconstructed Art Deco hall – another masterpiece of reconstruction – hosts every morning local producers, fishmongers from the Gironde Estuary, Charente farmers and regional artisans. Royan’s central market is open every morning in season. Not to miss for anything – it’s the living heart of the city of Royan.
Royan Congress Palace, another reconstruction jewel, is a building designed by Louis Simon in 1955 that resembles a spaceship more than a concert hall. Its concave façade, large windows overlooking the Atlantic and cantilever roof make it one of Royan‘s most original monuments. It hosts exhibitions, concerts and events throughout the year.
7 km off the coast of Royan, at the mouth of the Gironde Estuary, Cordouan Lighthouse is one of France‘s most extraordinary monuments – and one of the rare lighthouses in the world classified as UNESCO World Heritage. Built starting in 1584, this Renaissance baroque lighthouse-palace – with its interior chapel, royal apartments dedicated to the King of France (hence the nickname “Versailles of lighthouses”) and lantern at the top – is accessible by boat from Royan during large low tides. Saint-Georges-de-Didonne is the seaside resort neighboring Royan to the south. With its huge beaches and more family character, Saint-Georges-Didonne is ideal for families with children seeking less animation and more sand. Its Suzac Beach, at the foot of the eponymous woods, is one of the most beautiful in the sector.
Vaux-sur-Mer, north of Royan, is a quiet residential resort appreciated for its Belle Époque villas and quiet fine sand beach. The three communes form a perfect seaside triangle around Royan Atlantic bay.
Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is the most elegant resort in the Royan Saint-Palais sector. Its old villas, Grande Côte and Bureau beaches, and Pointe de la Coubre – with its lighthouse and adjacent state forest – make it an exceptional nature destination. A few kilometers from Royan, Planet Exotica park is the major family leisure park of the sector. 15 km from Royan, on the limestone cliffs of Meschers-sur-Gironde, Meschers Caves are a unique archaeological and tourist site. Carved into the cliff overlooking the Gironde Estuary, these troglodytic dwellings dating from the Neolithic were inhabited until the 19th century. The guided tour, with spectacular views of the Gironde and its boats, is an essential excursion from Royan. Meschers-Gironde-Saint is a perfect discovery triangle with Suzac forest.

Rainy days are rare but exist. Royan offers several covered options: Notre-Dame Church (free visit, admission free), Congress Palace (exhibitions), covered Royan central market for gourmet shopping. Meschers Caves are partially covered. Saintes, 40 km away (Roman amphitheater, museum), is the major cultural excursion on bad weather days.
